Distance: 24.8 miles (round-trip)
Travel Time: 4 - 4.5 hours
Ride Level: Advanced
The ride begins and ends at the Caerphilly Visitor Centre. Approximately 12 miles of the route are on walking & cycling paths. Due to a fair amount of climbing up the Taff Trail and navigating the narrow roads returning from Maesycwmmer to Bedwas this route is considered advanced.
Upon leaving the west side of the castle grounds, the ride follows NCN Route 4 (south) to Nantgarw whereupon it turns northwest onto NCN Route 8. The route then follows the old Bristol & Bath Railroad line to Pontypridd, thru Ynysangharad Park (just say Dennis & Harold very quickly... it's close enough for the locals to understand what you mean...) and then meanders north along the Taff River to Quakers Yard.
At Quakers Yard the ride turns off of NCN 8 and east onto NCN Route 47. Behind Quakers Yard Inn and thru the woods are the famous ZIG ZAGS (name needed!) up into Treharris. From Treharris to Hengoed Viaduct the route is pretty flat and straight passing through Parc Penalta to Maesycwmmer. From the Wheel o Drams (at the end of the Hengoed Viaduct) you leave the National Cycle Network to follow quiet Pandy Road for five lovely miles down along the eastern slope of the Rhymney Valley to Bedwas. From here the route joins NCN Route 4 again and it's a quick ride along several small roads and back into Caerphilly.
The approximate travel time is 3 to 3 1/2 hours (including a brief stop to photograph the valley from on top of the viaduct and to admire the "Wheel of Drams".)
